The Application of Fiberglass in The Aerospace Industry

The application of fiberglass in the aerospace industry

Glass fiber (fiberglass) is increasingly used in the aerospace field, mainly due to its excellent properties such as light weight, high strength, high temperature resistance, insulation, wave transmission and corrosion resistance. The following are some key applications of glass fiber in this field:

1. External components

Glass fiber cloth is often used in the manufacture of composite materials, as a reinforcing fiber combined with a resin matrix to form lightweight and high-strength structural parts. These composite materials are widely used in aircraft fuselages, wings, tail fins and other parts. These materials can effectively reduce weight while maintaining high strength and stiffness.

2. Internal components

Inside the aircraft, fiberglass cloth is used in aircraft interior wall panels, ceilings, floors and other partition structures due to its good mechanical properties and fire retardant characteristics, which not only increases safety but also effectively reduces noise transmission.

3. Radome

Glass fiber cloth is an ideal material for making radomes because of its low dielectric constant and good wave transmission performance. The radome needs to protect the internal antenna from the external environment without significantly attenuating the electromagnetic signal. Fiberglass cloth can meet these requirements.

4. ‌Electronic equipment shielding‌:

The electrical insulation and processability of fiberglass cloth can be used to make shielding covers of various shapes to protect sensitive avionics equipment from electromagnetic interference (EMI).

5. Protective devices

In some specific applications, glass fiber can be used to make shields and other protective devices to resist impact. Due to its fire resistance, fiberglass cloth can be used as fire protection material to enhance the safety of aircraft.

6. Thermal protection system

Using fiberglass cloth as thermal insulation or in combination with other high-temperature resistant materials can help build effective thermal protection systems, shells and other structures to protect spacecraft and their payloads against extreme environmental conditions.

7. Fuel tank lining:

Fiberglass cloth can be used with special coatings as an anti-corrosion lining on the inside of fuel tanks, protecting the metal tank from attack by fuel chemicals while ensuring a tight seal.

Summarize:

Glass fiber has become an indispensable material in the aerospace field due to its unique physical and chemical properties. As technology advances, more innovative applications may emerge in the future.
